General Notes: In violation of a law made in 1640, William sold his canoe to someone who lived outside the "plantation" and was fined. He was one of the original settlers of Springfield, Ma and owned a considerable amount of land that is now considered the heart of Springfield. William's first wife was Lady Alice Clifford. They eloped in 1600 from Lincolnshire and along with other members of William's family, they escaped from the noblemen who were chasing them. In crossing a river, all were drowned except William, Lady Alice and one other. Alice died in 1619 after which William sailed for America.
